“No! They gave THEMSELVES access!”
Welcome to episode 75 of Yet Another Tech Show. This is the technology podcast that’s not just your typical talking heads of tech reporting. We are lovers of tech that strive to bring you the tech discussions in an informative yet entertaining delivery. Yes. We have fun as we talk about the latest tech stories. This week the panel includes myself (Ant Pruitt), Mat Lee, Larry Press, Mike Rothman and Nick Carroll. Be sure to follow us online by clicking our names to see our social streams or go to the crew page to read more about us. We also have a brand new YouTube channel just for YATS! Be sure to subscribe here. There. Intros out of the way, let’s get into the show notes.
We start the show discussing the latest NSA privacy breach. Apparently, some wiretaps are on the lines of Google’s data centers. Yahoo has also been tapped. Well, we didn’t talk about it too much because we all know that privacy pretty much doesn’t exist anymore. Larry shared a piece he found regarding all of the build up behind the funding of the DOD and NSA doing all of this surveillance in the name of security. What are you thoughts on all of the precious data being tapped from Google and Yahoo considering how much of the data is your personal data.
We have had our first Google Glass traffic citation. Sure the lady was speeding, but it was interesting to see that Glass was cited. The panel and I discuss the line drawn to differentiate the use of our old GPS devices or our smartphones that are mounted on the vehicle dashboards and windshields. Size matters apparently (that’s what she said). Sure we want our highways and byways safe from distracted drivers, but how could a heads-up display be distracting? There are currently HUD’s available for use today. They’re legal and Glass isn’t?
Ever heard of Windy Day? Motorola users have been surprised with this little interactive feature that shows a narrative scene on your phone. According to Mat, it was quite captivating.
Motorola and Google state that the story will be interactive with the phone owners. This looks like another app on our smart devices that will change the way we all poop. A la Angry Birds. Let us know what you think of the spotlight Motorola has brought to the playing field.
Mike has enjoyed his time with his new Nokia 520. No it’s not his daily driver, but he’s using it as a media player. The Windows Phone ecosystem still hasn’t grabbed him since he’s vested in the Google Play world, but he gives props where props are due.
Ever looked at ads in your social media stream? Let me rephrase that question. Have you ever CLICKED on the ads in your social media streams? According to a report on Venture Beat, the ad ROI in social platforms such as Twitter and Facebook is paying off in big dollars in terms of costs per click (CPC). Check out the infographic below from Venture Beat.
I can’t honestly say that people in my circle of friends don’t pay much attention to the ads as they’re usually annoying. Granted, today the ads are reading our lives a little better so targeted ads are the norm. Even with targeted ads, do you as a YATS listener find value in ads in your social streams? Leave us a comment below with your thoughts.
Comcast recently started a promotion of giving subscribers HBO for free with its internet package. Well… sorta. You’d get the 25 Mbps internet package HBO and the low-end cable television package. This is aimed at cord cutters, but yet Comcast is still trying to throw it’s television package out there to them. Granted this is a promotional deal and is subject to a price increase if you read the fine print. Good luck with that, Comcast.
Lavabit got in a lot of hot water over the Snowden email mess recent because it didn’t want to share the private info. Now it’s teaming up with partners to provide a P2P secured email solution. Check out the article on Forbes for more details. I wonder how well this will go over from a federal and international legislative perspective. There’s also a great interview with Ladar Levison from Lavabit on Triangulation over on the TwiT network.

Steve Jobs home in Los Altos is now going to be an official historical landmark in Los Altos. Tech nerds all know that this is the home and garage Jobs and Steve Wozniak put together the personal computer provided by Apple. Great news and well deserved credit for the Apple founders.
